Cheng(1) Lin [118] Yi's [3105] lineage uncle. Ancestors were Zhongshan jun Cheng(1). He moved from Yongning, Boye xian to Henan, Luoyang xian where he was buried. Lin(1) was Sigong's [123] and Silong's [7134] father, Chao(2) Zhongyue's [7120], Han(1) Zhen's [634], and Rong(1) Yin's [889] father-in-law. Another son Sibi's [3107] father-in-law was Jia(3) Changchao [8031]. Lin was an elder lineage cousin of Yi [3105] and Hao [3102]. The generational names of Lin, his cousin Yu(2) [3114], Yu(2)'s cousin Fan [3101], Hao's and Yi's father, Xiang [3103], and Xiang's younger brother, Chong [3099] all use the jade radical. Yi, in his funerary inscription for Hao, traces his ancestry to the Yongning, Boye xian, Zhongshan jun Cheng(1), who moved to Henan, Luoyang xian. Hao in Yu's and Fan's funerary inscriptions provides them with a similar background. Yi, in his biography for his father, Xiang, refers to Lin as lineage elder cousin and in Ouyang Xiu's funerary inscription for Lin's father, Yuanbo [15697], Yuanbo and his uncle, Xiangming (not in dataset), are summoned to an audience with Yuanbo's granduncle (congzu), Yu(5) [15695], then prefect of Kaifeng Fu. This Yu(5) was the great great grandfather of Cheng Hao, Yi and their other Cheng cousins. I am making Lin a 3rd cousin of Xiang. Fan and Yu moved from Yongning, Boye xian [former address of Lin] to Kaifeng. One of Yu(2)'s (Cheng Yi's cousin) sons-in-law was Zhou(1) Chunming [3239], whose father Changru [3238] was a student of Shao(2) Yong [3718]. Changru died early and Shao(2) Yong [3718] raised Zhou(1) Chunming as if he were his own son. Since one source indicates that Chunming's wife was Hao's niece, this certainly reaffirms continued connection between these two branches of the lineage. Chunming also studied with Cheng(1) Hao. Fan's grandfather-in-law was Cao(1) Liyong [8133]. Lin is listed as a Huizhou, Xiuning resident jinshi in 1011 in Huizhou FZ, 6.4a, which suggests the possibility that this was a branch of the Cheng that settled in Xiuning, that Lin or his immediate ancestors may have moved there at some time and that Ouyang Xiu is merely using the chronym as a basis for determining ancestral address. On the other hand, the ancestry that Ouyang Xiu provides for Lin during the Tang is that of a branch of the Guangping Cheng that segemented much later than the settlers in Huizhou. It probably reflects the clan creation and inclusion strategy of the Southern Song when many of the Xinan Cheng in various parts of South China adopt the jade radical generational indicator shared by Lin and his lineage cousins, Xiang, Fan, Chong, Yu(2), etc. Others (e.g., grandsons of Cheng(1) Dachang [3109], who adopt the generational indicator [Duan+x] of the sons of Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi) consolidate at other times. According to Wang Anshi's funerary inscription for Lin's wife, born Chen Shi, his father-in-law, Chen(1) Jing(10) [15733], loved his daughter and did not want her to remain in the community and therefore moved to the capital where she married Lin at the age of 19 when Lin was still only a recent jinshi.
