Diao(1) Yanneng [11925] According to Wang(2) Anshi [1762] in his funerary inscription for his great grandson, Diao(1) A [11940], The Diao(1) was an illustrious surname (xianxing) of Jiangnan. According to Renming Da cidian, Yanneng was originally from Shangcai, orphaned as a youth and rose to high position under the Southern Tang. However, all other sources have this branch of the Diao as Danyang people since Eastern Jin, Yuandi, fled south and established Danyang as a county and as his capital. See founding ancestor Gong's [11927] documentation. The descendants of Kui [11931] probably are the direct ancestors of this branch of the lineage, whereas his brother, Chang [11933], and his son, Yong [11934], fled North when Liu(2) Yu [12175] executed Huan Xuan (not in dataset) (369-404), who had established himself in Jiangning as emperor of Chu in 403. Liu(2) Yu killed Diao(1) Kui's son, Hong [11932], and there are no further historical references to Kui's descendants or other Danyang Diao until Southern Tang. Yong and his descendants are prominant during Northern Wei and Northern Qi. Giles, Biographical dictionary, pp. 325-6. See also CBD, 1, 18.
