Cheng(1) Yu [128] His family settled in Huizhou, Xixian during the Jin dynasty when an ancestor, Yuantan [15376] (also ancestor of the Quzhou, Kaihua Cheng) was prefect and the local population asked him to remain after the end of his term of office. When he died, The Sima emperor Yuandi granted his sons and grandsons an estate in Huizhou, Xixian. According to Hu Quan's funerary inscription, Yuantan's descendant, Lingxi [15355] (founder of the Xinan Cheng), organized militia to protect Yi and Xi (i.e. Huizhou) against the rebellion of Hou(1) Jing (a Northerner, who rebelled under the Southern Liang dynasty and ultimately surrendered to Wudi and in ca. 547 was enfeoffed as Henan Wang [Renming Da cidian, 624]. Lingxi moved to Xiuning and served with distinction in the administration of the Chen dynasty. Lingxi's descendant and Cheng Yu's 10th generation ancestor, Cheng B [3097], moved to Raoyang, Fuliang county. Cheng(1) Dachang's [3109] ancestors were descendants of Lingxi, who remained in Xiuning. Since Yu does a funerary inscription (xingshi) for Cheng(1) Ju [7007], the collective memory of this lineage spanned almost a millenium. Yu also has the same generational name as one branch of Cheng(1) Yi [3105] and Cheng(1) Hao's [3102] lineage (Zhongshan Cheng). Hu Quan records the remarkable history of Yu's immediate ancestry in detail. In summary, Yu's great great grandfather, Yanzhu [15436], became a respected member of the community, his great grandfather, Zhongqing [15438], added to the regulations of his branch of the lineage (jiafa), whereas his grandfather, Yu(4) [15439], was fond of associating with the rich and famous such as Peng(1) Ruli [1400] and Jin(1) Junqing [470]. Yu's father, Fu(2) [15440], failed the exams. His father was the son-in-law of Jin(1) Junqing. A Fuliang county resident Zang was the son-in-law of Cheng(1) Yu and, when there was no offspring from this union, Yu's mother, born Jin Shi, ordered him to be the heir of Mr. Zang and his surname was originally Zang, In fact, HSSCGY, 15.11a has the #1 university graduate in 1116 as Zang(1) Yu, although his name on later compiled lists is Cheng(1) Yu: he took back his original surname after becoming famous. I have identified this Zang as Zang A [15534], probable lineage granduncle of You [13941] and Tong [13943], two of Yu's son-in-laws, and probable kin to the other Fuliang Zang. Hu Quan, WJ, 23.1a-43b; SHY:ZG, 69.26b. CBD, 4, 3014-3015.
