Zheng(1) Xiang(5) [15288] There is a farout possibility that he could be the same man as id # 415, but it would be chronologically very unusual. There is a better possiblity that these are Rongyang Zheng since Dunfang, a Rongyang Zheng (CBD, 5, 3706--not in dataset), has the same generational name as Xiang's sons. There are probably two Zheng Xiang: The Xiang listed as jinshi in Hunan TZ, 134.6b, in CBD, and father of Dunzhong [15289] clearly refer to the same person since all hold assignment as Longtu xueshi. However, Hunan TZ has Ping [16424] as Xiang's son, Ben [16425] and Ge [16426] as Ping's brothers, and Ouyang Xiu's funerary inscription for Ping lists a low-level office for his unnamed father. Moreover, in Hunan TZ, Xiang is listed as a 1010 jinshi on the list headed by Xiang Minzhong. Minzhong was a 980 jinshi, not zhuangyuan, and there was no exam sitting in 1010. I conclude that the Xiang [415], who was a fiscal official, was a Hengyang resident, jinshi in 980 and that he was Ping's father and that the compilers of the Hunan TZ identified him with the more distinguished Longtu xueshi Xiang. Since the jinshi date must have some empirical basis, I assume it refers to the Dazhong 2 or 1009 list and that this Xiang received his jinshi in 1009. In other words, the two Xiang biographies were consolidated by the compilers of the Hunan TZ. CBD, 5, 3652.
