Chen(1) Yu(4) [17607] Zong Ze, WJ, 3.11a-12a. Zong(1) Ze's [3897] father was good friends with Yu(4) and the two families became bound together as yinjia. Zong(1) Ze and his brother, Zong(1) Yi [17596], were both Yu(4)'s sons-in-law. Yu(4)'s grandson, Zongyang was Zong(1) Ze's son-in-law and the son of Zong(1) Ze's sister. Zongyang's father is not identified and I am arbitrarily making him son of Yu(4)'s #2 son, Xi(6) [17608], thereby making Xi(6) a son-in-law of Zong(1) Ze's father, Shunqing [17595]. This family's assignment of mingzi may provide a clue to the system in general when sons have different generational indicators. Three of his six sons use radical 9 as the generational indicator, whereas two (#2 and #6) use radical 167. The only jinshi was #2, but #6, Tang(4) [17642], was the grandfather-in-law of Shang(1) Qi [17640], whose mingzi also used radical 167. Five of his grandsons used Zong+x as a generational indicator, whereas two used different generational indicators. One of these, Zhao [17609], was the only grandson to earn the jinshi.
