Yan(4) Chenghan [2067] He was castrated between the ages of 5 and 13 during the Xiande period (954-959) of the Later Zhou dynasty. According to several sources, when Zhao(1) Renzong [9004] took over personal control of the state in 1032-33, he made plans with Lu(9) Yijian [8100] to remove from their positions of power Zhang(1) Qi(2) [8009], Xia(2) Song [703], Chen(1) Yaozuo [98], Fan(2) Yong [593], Yan(5) Shu [2073], Qian(1) Weiyan [8006], and Zhao(1) Sheng's [387] son, Zhao(1) Ji [3194]. These men were considered partisans of the former regent Yang(2) Huangtaihou [4215]. Lu(9) Yijian was dismissed instead. Yan(4) Chenghan's adopted eunuch son, Yan(4) Wenying [4117], was allied with Lu(9) Yijian and discovered Yijian was dismissed because of the influence of the empress Guo(1) (appointed Huanghou in 1033) [4216]. When Lu(9) Yijian returned to power, he conspired with Wenying to have the Guo(1) Huanghou dismissed. The plan failed, but our sources suggest that Wenying was responsible for Guo(1) Huanghou's subsequent sudden death.
