Zhang(1) Gang [252] Jinshi # 1. His father made him responsible for the family business (jiawu), which he managed during the day. In the evening, he studied and graduated # 1 in each step of the degree process (university degree #1, jinshi in 1115). His wife was the only daughter of Li(2) Chaozheng's [975] father, Ye [3545]. All six of Gang's daughters were married to literati lineages (shizu). His ancestors are traced to those of the Fanyang Zhang by quoting the first lines of the XTS genealogy of the Zhang. The author of Gang's xingzhuang then identifies a Zhang(1) Xian(5) [13767], who held office in Zhenjiang and moved from Heshuo (i.e. Fanyang) to Zhenjiang and then a Zhang(1) Lian [13768] (and others), who all served in the administration of Southern Tang. I am arbitrarily dating the move of Xian(5) as 800 and the active year of Lian as 930. Gang's father, Ao [13775], was the first office-holder after three generations of yinju. Gang's grandson, Fu [3140], received the jinshi in 1178, was Guangxi tiju and subsequently yunpan between 1192 and 1195, was appointed Duzhi langzhong, Huaixi zongling in 1196, and was a member of the state council for a short period in 1201.
