Zhang(1) Gen [255] His ancestors moved south during the Five Dynasties. Li Gang, WJ, 170.8a has them as Huizhou, Xixian residents, who moved to Raozhou, Dexing at the end of the Tang. Wang(1) Zao, WJ, 24.6b has them as descendants of the Tang zaixiang, Wenguan [12407], as does Zhou Bida, WJ, 64.11a, who says that the descendants of Wenguan produced many jinshi and office-holders during the Song. Wang Zao's context would have a direct move from North China to Dexing. But, Wei Liaoweng's funerary inscription for Daxun [13930] has Wenguan moving to Hangzhou; a descendant moving to Huizhou to avoid the Huang(2) Chao [3409] rebellion and another descendant moving to Dexing, probably at the beginning of Southern Tang. The number of Dexing jinshi, many with the same generational name Gen's lineage, support Zhou Bida and Wang Zao's genealogies. I am taking Liaoweng's genealogy as correct since it is more detailed than the others and moving Wenguan to Hangzhou; including a Zhang(1) C [12407], who moved to Huizhou in ca. 880, and a Zhang(1) H [13927], who moved during Southern Tang (ca, 930), i.e about the same time Zhang(1) Mian's [262] ancestors moved to Poyang. The family was powerful (haojie) in their community (xiang). According to Wang Zao, Gen was the first to hold office, but Zhou Bida cites offices for both father and grandfather. At the age of fourteen, Gen entered the imperial university (taixue) as a result of being #2 on a test used to recruit matriculants. He was jinshi in 1082 at the age of 21 and came to the attention of the Libu shangshu, Huang(2) Lu [8066], who gave him a daughter to wed (Zhang Xiaoxiang, WJ, 24.6b-7a). Gen was Zhi's [199] brother, Dao(2)'s [8019] father, Huang(2) Lu's [8066] son-in-law, Huang(2) Bosi's [7030], Li(2) Gang's [8078], Fan(2) Wei's [7027], Li(2) Fuguo's [7038] and Xue(1) Liangxian's [804] father-in-law, Liu(2) Zhengfu's [8088] brother-in-law. Jiangxi TZ, 9.40a; Zhou Bida, WJ, 64.11a-24a; Li Gang, WJ, 170.9b; SHY:ZG, 68.37a, 40a; SHY:SH, 49.27a; Wang Zao, WJ, 24.6b. CBD, 3, 2271-2.
