Jia(3) An [449] Jinshi # 1. Xue(1) Shen's [807] son-in-law. Father-in-law of Cai(1) Xiang(1)'s [1651] son, Min [3864]. At one time, An criticized the practice of making the grandfather of the husband of an imperial princess (gongzhu) [when she married down (jia xia)], his father and his father, his elder brother (Wang Gui, WJ, 54.18a) [presumably in order to establish generational seniority]. The character jia (women plus family) may be significant in other cases (as opposed to the more common 'shi' or 'gui') and the practice may not be limited to imperial marriages. The adoption of common generational names by affinal lineages may serve a similar function. An died in Kaifeng, but was buried in Nanyang. See also documentation for Jia(3) Wei(2) [11746].
